I have been a teacher at Tunghai for five years. In addition to this, I've taught high school in my home country (South Africa), have worked as a Summer Counselor in the United States twice, and have both coordinated as well as taught at varying institutions across Taiwan throughout my thirteen years on the island. I have also taught Children's Yoga for three years at Tunghai. |

I feel privileged to work here at Tunghai. It is a great school with an illustrious past as well as an exciting future. May good things continue to happen! |

I believe that students work best when fully engaged, and I seek to achieve this by planning lessons that stimulate all manner of intelligences that occur within each classroom context. By creating classroom environments that stimulate both IQ and EQ in equal measure, students can develop into holistic people who not only benefit themselves but also the world at large. |

Experience經歷 |
The seeds of teaching interest and experience were first sown as a teenager working with elementary aged children at a Canadian summer camp. In the company of caring role models and mentors, the counseling, teaching, and program planning of these early years would lay a foundation for further teaching experiences abroad. My first Taiwan teaching experience was a long and fruitful one, instructing for 13 years at a Chiayi language school for young learners run by graduates of Tunghai University, followed by almost five and half years here at the Elementary Division of the Affiliated High School. |
Specialties專長 |
A key specialty is experience with long term team-based activities which take English learning outside of the classroom and give students more democratic control and responsibility, including student radio show programming and reader's theater. |
Teaching Ideologies教學理念 |
As an educator I feel called to help children see the interdependent relationships between information, people, and the world around them. Successful living requires empathy, cooperation, and problem-solving, and I try manage my classes to facilitate this development through team-based lessons and communication tasks. I also believe that information is best learned in pieces that build upon each other, sequentially, contextually, and meaningfully to allow learners to truly acquire what they are required to learn. As such I try to scaffold what I teach in ways that different kinds of learners can understand, retain, and use each day. |

Teaching Ideologies教學理念 |
Learning is a lifelong endeavor. I encourage students to be lifelong learners who take initiative in learning - about themselves and the world around them. The classroom is a place to guide, prepare and inspire. It should also be a safe place for students to ask questions and wonder about all they have yet to learn. I hope learning does not stop once students have walked out the door. If I can help plant a seed of curiosity and interest in students, or help water seeds that have already been planted, I will consider my teaching to be a success. |

Teaching Ideologies教學理念 |
As an educator, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for my chosen occupation. It is difficult for me to imagine doing another job that I would find as personally rewarding and challenging as teaching. Teaching consistently presents opportunities to help me evolve and grow in my craft. There are always new skills to learn, from how to best reach out to and assist new students in my classes, to staying abreast of the latest in language instruction pedagogy and it’s real-world, classroom application. To be a quality teacher, one has the duty of being a life-long learner. This space for continued personal and professional growth is in itself a priceless benefit. Educating is also a personally worthwhile and gratifying career. I feel a full sense of satisfaction from my students’ growth and development both as individuals and as competent users of English. I happily look forward to many more productive years pursuing this career path. When it comes to the students and their learning, I think the classroom should be a safe and supportive environment where they can feel free to achieve their full potential. Students should each be recognized for their unique mix of skills and abilities. |

Teaching Ideologies教學理念 |
The general focus for my classes will be to create an interactive and dynamic learning experience grounded in the fundamentals of comprehension, reading, speaking and writing. I look forward to the challenges of making a classroom environment for my students that is both respectful and disciplined while maintaining an ethos of fun and creativity. The ability for any of my students to think on a conceptual level (or ‘out of the box’) is key and something that I will try to develop and encourage. I have always felt that English is a multifaceted subject and that a number of approaches for teaching it will be required. |
