I first started teaching English after completing my TEFL in 2008. From there, I continued to teach periodically between my studies, and taught for 3 years in Taiwan while completing my postgraduate studies in psychology. In 2018, I completed my Postgraduate Certificate in Education and Training, with a specialisation in English and Life Guidance.

Along the way, I gained experience teaching a variety of ages in several multicultural contexts, as well as in some different and interesting styles and schools, with each having something to teach me that I could add to my approach.

Aside from teaching English, my main interests are in the psychological sciences specifically around how language, behaviour, meaning, and values interact and guide our lives.

My other interests include the martial arts, chess, cooking, cycling, and of course, cats!

My approach to teaching is informed by my own experience in learning languages and being a student, as well as psychological theory, and modern teaching approaches.

I believe there is good evidence that proper understanding is important for memory retention, and essential to being able to apply and further build on such knowledge. I also think there is a happy medium between competence and challenge, where learning is neither overwhelming nor boring. So my own approach is mostly focussed on helping students to understand the work, and to be appropriately challenged using activities and topics that interest them.

After that I worked as a computer science teacher at a high school in South Africa for a year. The following year I moved to Taiwan and worked as a teacher at a Joy cram school for 15 years before starting my current teaching position at Tunghai Elementary School.

As I was a cram school teacher for 15 years, I gained in-depth knowledge in teaching English as a foreign language and also in preparing students for English tests. I have experience in preparing students for the GEPT, TOEFL, and TOEIC tests.

Apart from English teaching, I am also able to teach sports and computer science.

My teaching philosophy is to make students excited about learning. In my experience, excited students are the most receptive to learning since they simply forget that they are learning. This may seem to be an overly simple philosophy, yet it has proven effective for all my years of teaching.

教學理念

Teaching is a life choice for me, something I am driven to do. The needs of my students are always my first priority. I orchestrate a student centered classroom, where the teacher facilitates the student's growth, leading them to ask and answer important questions for themselves.

I give the students the lexical tools to build their own English foundations, and also foster their innate confidence, to find their own voices and speak with strength and compassion.

I expect excellence from my students. I encourage them to demand excellence from themselves. I do this not for status or an exam score; I do it to empower them and by their individual thinking, create choices in their lives.

I am a self-starting, participative educator, experienced in a broad range of business, leadership, and multi-cultural experiences.

It is my pleasure and joy to be an educator at Tung Hai School.
